An association for the workers of Santarém is born, dedicated to education, recreation and the healthy use of leisure time.
The association changes its name twice before arriving at the name it still holds today.
The SRO celebrates its Silver Jubilee with a one-off commemorative newspaper, published on 31 March 1940, and a ball in the Society's halls, with music from an accordionist and a jazz band. The newspaper honours the founding members and pays tribute to member number one, Bernardo Paulino Pereira.
On 14 March 1950, the Civil Governor of Santarém approves the new Statutes and makes the name Sociedade Recreativa Operária official. The association's aims include a reading room, lectures, excursions, art exhibitions, soirées and charity fairs, as well as support for members when they are out of work.
After decades of success on stage, the theatre group ends its activity at the start of the decade, in a country marked by the regime and the outbreak of the Colonial War.
Dance takes centre stage in the life of the headquarters, with strong results in competition. Later, DanceSport brings national championship titles.
